Aiming to support the work of Tear Fund, both financially and spiritually.

This year Andrew and Louise Holt, part of Bracknell Family Church, came to Caversham to tell us about their experiences working with Tear Fund in Uganda.

Tear fund have a 10 year vision to see 50 million people released from material and spiritual poverty through a worldwide network of 100,000 local churches.

Tear Fund is the Evangelical Alliances Relief fund and was set up in the 1960’s to help relieve the famine that had been caused by Nigeria’s Civil war, the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s saw more famine and Tear fund was there helping to relieve the poverty and devastation of famine and flooding.

Now Tear fund are calling on the Church to be “part of a miracle” not a revolution as they aim to help people out of poverty.

Steve Beazely ran the half marathon with his fiance last year, and didn’t learn from the blisters, soreness and achyness so has decided to run the marathon again this year.

Steve is this year running solo and aiming to raise funds for the Drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre, Yeldall Manor.

Steve says “As someone who battled a serious alcohol addiction several years ago, I know the pain and difficulty of trying to recover on your own. How I wish that I could have had help from a place like Yeldall Manor. It is not just the person with the addiction who suffers, the addiction affects their family, friends and colleagues, too – everyone around them. What I needed to get better was people who understood how I felt and had the patience to help me put my life back together. Most of all, I needed healing mentally and spiritually as well as physically, the sort of healing that could only come from accepting Jesus into my life. I have replaced the alcohol with faith in God and the Half Marathon is symbolic to me of how I am now running a straight course through life to a positive future.”

This is what Yeldall Manor provides for men of all ages and from all around the country – acceptance, support and a safe place to transform your life.

– For men just like me who have faced troubles in their life and not been able to cope, turning to alcohol or drugs to try and block out the problems and depression.

– For men just like me who simply need a second chance to reintegrate with society and their loved ones and to have a fulfilling life.

It’s a chance to reminisce about the old times, meet old friends and make new ones, all while singing your favourite hymns. There will be an opportunity for you to choose your favourite hymn and to tell us why that hymn inspires you. A chance to hear what inspired the hymn writers and how these hymns have changed the lives of the people who live in Caversham.

Hymn Cafe starts at 3.45pm and finishes at 5pm.

So if you like a piece of cake, enjoy a natter over a cup of tea and a good old sing to some of those great old tunes, then Hymn Cafe is the place to be.

We meet at South Street every third sunday of the month at 3.45pm.

Meet other Mums with Children, and visit life from a Christian perspective.  With topical talks on interesting subjects and a fun-time group for the children.

The CCA drop-in is there to help you and to provide you with the right services you need whatever your financial circumstances.

So from Midday until 2pm, drop in to the church and we will be glad to help you.

THE YOUTH ARE THE CHURCH OF TOMORROW

Therefore we do not need to involve them today.

We should send them away after 15-20 minutes which will allow us to get on with what we want to do without having these distractions.

We are, of course, grateful to the people who give up time to baby-sit and teach our children and we hope that, when they get to 16, they will want to come into the adult service full-time.

This service will, of course, be geared to the culture of our own generation and we do not want to change things. We would, of course, be happy for them to make the odd suggestion as long as it doesn’t involve inconvenience.

They can certainly have one seat on the decision-making body and we will smile benevolently as they come out with their unrealistic idealism.”

Thus reads the epitaph of the dead church.

Alternatively the children and young people are part of the church of today, have gifts and should be as actively involved as anyone else.

t Caversham Baptist Church our children show a greater freedom in worship than we adults, as they dance at the side of the stage.

One of our worship leaders recently chose the first few songs based on what his 5-year-old daughter was singing. The children and young people take regular services and some of them are involved in leading the first part of our worship before they go out to child-friendly teaching from a team of dedicated adults.

After that they return and are free, within health and safety boundaries, to enjoy being together.

We provide a creche though we do not demand that parents use it. A crying baby is usually only a distraction to their own parent.

Let the children come, let them get involved, let them feel welcome, let them fel that it is as much their church as anyone else’s.

Caversham Baptist Church is at the heart of Caversham’s community, and also its village centre. We offer you a warm welcome to our website and also if you visit us, we hope you will find a warm welcome from our Church family.

We are an all age church stepping out in faith and working together, to bring the good news of God’s love to the people of Caversham. We hope to have something to offer every member of the family, from the new born baby to those who may not be as agile as they once were.

We have two premises, Our South Street building is the main church for all our activites and worship, we also have a daughter church in Kidmore Road where we meet most Sunday evenings.

The leaders were each asked to draw up some ideas to put to the membership and these were the ideas.

Youth 11 – 16

This group would like help with the tuck shop to release the leaders of the club, so they can chat to the regular attenders.  They also would like one off visits to help lead a group developing some of the skills the church members have.  This could include, drama, dance, music, computer skills or anything you feel you may be able to do with the young people.

Regular prayer support is also required.

Pebbles & Gems 5 – 11 year olds.

Chris & Jan are the leaders of these two youth groups and they are asking for similar help, with one off visits, to help develop a skill.  This again could be music or drama, dance, computer skills, craft or card making.

They also require regular leadership help on a rota basis, as well as regular prayer support.

One thing the leaders have asked for is attendance at the open meetings in order to meet the children and their parents.

It is also hoped that we might encourage a visit to Costa to coincide with Pebbles and/or Gems as an opportunity to engage with the parents of the children.
